WHAT IS LITTLE WHITE LIES AND WHY DOES IT APPEAL TO ME?
I have been researching into several different magazines and the one I feel to be most appropriate is 'Little white lies' which is a bi-monthly, British independent movie magazine that features writing, illustration and photography related to cinema. I really like how the covers tend to give little away by only focusing on the main character. The design of each issue of Little White Lies is inspired by its feature film, represented on the cover by an illustration of its lead actor. I really like how the title of the film/ caption are quite transparent allowing you to be drawn in purely by the illustration, then leading you to read into what it is portraying. I prefer this approach in contrast to other leading magazine companies which purely advertise text of extreme size and bold fonts when it comes down to typography.
The first issue was released in February 2005 to only UK stores, making it perfect to represent our film. In 2008, Little White Lies won Best Designed Consumer Magazine of the Year at the Magazine Design and Journalism Awards.

Magazine Ideas
First draft of initial idea's
Here is a painting I created to resemble the character 'Bradley Hunter' played by Matt Stainton.
I also did a bold pen drawing of the character 'Emily Miles' played by Emily Harry.

I then went on to further edit my pen drawing on a website called 'www.befunky.com'. I tried to create a gruesome effect to really relate back to the genre. Originally I only wanted to capture the face of one character but I feel it is a necessity to include both as they are equally as important, also in the trailer we try to show very little of the villains face to give an element of surprise when watching the film. This may effect the popularity of the magazine as people may not recognise the actor so I would like to advertise both characters.
I didn't like the effects above so I went for more of a simplicity and edited the colours on Photoshop I prefer the black and white edit and would like to further edit this version.
To finalise my magazine cover I added text so that it would be like other Little White Lies magazine's. The text is usually quite transparent or hidden and not obvious. I chose to put the film title slanted across the eyebrow, I later on changed the font so that it would match the font i used for my poster, linking them together. The caption was also included and composed to form the nose shape.
