Experimenting with Foley sounds.
Below are some clips which explain and perform Foley sounds.
What is a Foley sound? A Foley sound is a sound effect which replaces the original sound from the footage.
Why is this done? Sometimes the sound from the footage isn't easy to make out or is not as loud as they would've liked.
How is it done? To create the sound you can either record all the sound again, close to a microphone or you can mimic the sound using props.
In these videos below several sounds have been mimicked using props or close up recording. For example:
Breaking a bone: celery
Fire burning: scrunching cling film
Cleaning window: A window was cleaned and recorded using a microphone close up to the window in the same actions as the clip.
As a team we decided to create our own Foley sounds that we felt would be appropriate for a Horror. This would also help with our worry about background noise.

OUR OWN FOLEY SOUNDS
|
Here we recorded running within a hall that allowed a loud echo. This would help make the running in our trailer more obvious. However, our running takes place mainly outside and this wouldn't work well with a scene that was located on grass for example.
We are also planning on locating our scream in this hall as we feel the echo will really lengthen the sound and make intense for our closing clip. |
|
This Foley sound is feet moving around in leaves. This would really create an atmosphere when our characters are walking around within the woods.
It will also work very well in comparison to our first attempt of running. This Foley sound will match up perfectly with our location. It can be used to indicate that something is following our main character or rustling around within the bushes watching her. |
|
This is a clip of a door shutting. This specific door is very creaky and a creaky door is an iconic sound used in several Horrors. Although this sound may not link to out production is could be used if we chose to change our location as any stage.

This is a Foley sound that we will most likely use. We swung round a skipping rope to resemble the sound of wind. Wind is also very common in Horror films so this would be very useful. We may not be able to capture real wind sounds and it may also interfere with the quality of the footage so it would be better to capture the sound as a Foley.

This video to the right was one we chose to use toward the end of the clip to bring the music to an end without just fading it out using premier pro.

Here are some music videos we collected off youtube to see which would really work best and create the most tension.
This first video is quite slow so we thought it could be possible to speed up but once placed in the trailer it didnt work well with what was going on so we scrapped this idea and moved on. We wanted to relate the teddy bear picnic song into our trailer as it involves the woods and would really link well with our young protagonist. It was very hard to find a scary version so we found this video of a woman playing a keyboard version which we hoped to edit to an appropraite sound. Below is the email we sent to the video owner and his response. We chose not to use this video however as we couldnt edit it to be scary as it was too up beat and cheerful. As we couldnt find a scary version of the teddy bear picnic song we chose to create our own by singing a slow eerie version. We will further edit this in premier pro by slowing it down and altering the audio to a slightly deeper tone possibly. |
Due to the fact we couldnt select a singular track as none really fitted what we were searching for so we came across these above videos to decided to combine them. This worked really well and we used them for our chase scene. We had to crop them in certain areas so that it would be dramatic during particular moments to give tension.
