1st draft -
HUNTER
The film opens at the end, with an unidentified eerie figure standing over what appears to be the remains of a corpse, badly butchered injuries to his forearms and smothered in cracking dried blood, the figure licks his lips in a sickening manner turns the body over to fall into a pit, landing upon a heap of other bodies and corpses. We are left looking from the corpse’s point of view, up at the figure, who, after a moment of hesitation proceeds to shovel dirt into the pit, which lands over the camera shot.
Titles appear and we are introduced to the film.
The film begins in retrospect and we are introduced to our protagonist, Emily. Emily leads a normal 13 year olds life, and this is projected through the beginning of the film. Emily wakes up, gets ready for school, argues with her father before leaving and so begins her monotonous day.
We learn that Emily’s closest friend is a girl called Kayleigh, the two girls walk to school and Kayleigh begins to talk about her new ‘boyfriend’. Emily gets jealous.
Throughout the day, there have been subtle hints and reminders of recent murder cases, all thought to be by the same man.
In order to impress her friend, Emily begins searching for an older male attention by posting ‘suggestive’ photos on her Social Networking page. Kayleigh disagrees with Emily’s methods and the two girls proceed to have a fight.
Some time has passed and Emily gets a random message from a stranger, he is complementing and polite. Naive Emily easily falls for his trap and it is not long before the young man, which the audience now knows as ‘Bradley Hunter’ asks to meet with her.
Throughout the begging of the film so far there has been consistent symbolism and forewarning, the film is working towards a pivotal moment to create a dramatic and suspense filled narrative.
Emily agrees to meet with the stranger, only for the audience to discover he is a murderer, yet Emily remains unaware. The film treats the build up of the meeting as a huge suspense filled moment and the tension is nail biting.
After the meeting, Emily is made aware of the young man’s sadistic intentions, she, out of instinct, begins to run. This only excites the Hunter and the audience is reminded of the films strap line ‘A good hunter loves the chase’.
The film climaxes at a long chase between the Hunter and Emily, the film reaches all of the horror conventions in the scenes to follow. Yet complying with a strong stereotype of the genre, The Hunter final catches Emily and she is subjected to her cruel fate. The film has come back to the opening, which the audience can now establish as Emily.
